01 / Artist history

From an online alias to a changing body of work.

Crowell’s official archive dates his use of Sqaz to around 2000–2001. It also identifies original rap recordings from 2007, placing the name within a history that predates his current AI-assisted production. These early dates describe the archive’s account of his activity, rather than a newly established commercial release chronology.

His work brings together hip-hop, electronic production, dubstep, alternative R&B and experimental songwriting. Earlier piano, vocal and recording material remains part of that history, while later versions revisit existing songs through different arrangements and production methods.

The 2026 release Only Real Things carries credits connecting Call Me Daddy, William J. Crowell, Sqaz and MusicSubject. Other projects take different directions: The Musician Police addresses musical tools through satire; Make Me an Animal exists in several versions; Satan’s Loan connects a later electronic recording to an earlier poem.

The four names describe the person, his project and successive artist identities. They are presented together here to make that continuity explicit, while retaining the different roles each name has played.
